2013 NCAA March Madness: Ranking the Sweet 16 Match-ups

NCAA March Madness

With Duke’s win 66-50 over Marquette, the men have filled the Sweet 16 spots and are ready to resume the battle for the NCAA title starting next Thursday March 28th.

So far this year, most favorite teams have endured the first two rounds of competition and head to the Sweet Sixteen; but two squads with no "real chances" to reach this round of the tournament, Wichita State and Florida Gulf Coast University, have found the strength to redefine the meaning of “underdog”.

Wichita State kicked off March Madness at 500/1 odds to win the tournament while FGCU was 750/1. Despite the Cinderella status, the No. 9 seeded Wichita State Shockers (28-8) opened the 2013 NCAA Tournament with a 73-55 win over the Pittsburg Panthers on the second round of the contest. Then last Saturday, the Shockers defeated top ranked and top seeded Gonzaga (76-70) to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2006. Shockers play No. 13 seeded La Salle Explorers (24-9, 11-5 A 10) on Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles  (26-10, 13-5 A-Sun) became just the seventh 15 seed in tourney history to win their first-round matchup after a surprising 78-68 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas on the second round of the tournament.  But that didn’t stop there. Last weekend, the Eagles entered the record books, becoming the first No. 15 seed in 75-year history of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16 after defeating No.7 San Diego State 81-71 last Sunday Night. As a result, the Eagles will face the No.3 Florida Gators (28-7, 14-4 SEC) on Friday at Texas Stadium as part of the NCAA Sweet Sixteen action.
