San Jose Sharks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh Penguins host the San Jose Sharks at Consol Energy Center in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday. The The Penguins took Game 1 in the Stanley Cup Final with a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Oddsmakers
currently have Pittsburgh listed as 125-moneyline favorites, with the total at 5½.

Nick Bonino was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the sixth round of the 2007 entry draft, but he would never play a game for the big club. After he scored the winning goal in game one for Pittsburgh with less than three minutes to go, I bet they would like to have him back.

In fact that goal was his 12th career playoff goal and his fifth winner. Four of those five game winning goals have come with less than three minutes to go in the game. The man is clutch and for the past two months he’s been centering a line with Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin.

It is the so called third line for the Pens, but with Sydney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, two of the very best players in the world the focal point of the other two lines teams have to pick their poison. The result is that the third line has become the team’s most consistent point producing line game in and game out.

The San Jose Sharks have found out what the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning already know. The Penguins are a deep team that have found the chemistry and the offense at the perfect time of year. The Pens outshot San Jose 41-26 and that huge discrepancy is something they have been doing to their opponent game in and game out.

Although he only had one assist, Crosby was a beast controlling possession for huge stretches and if not for Bonino’s goal might have been first star.

Goaltender Matt Jones almost stole one for the Sharks, but it was a heads up, somewhat risky play by the Pens number one defenceman Kris Letang that proved the difference on the winner. Looking for that goal he was deep in the Sharks zone battling for the puck and good things often happen when you play without that fear.

The puck came to him on the end boards and the defenceman pursuing him was San Jose’s best and Norris candidate Brent Burns. The only problem was Burns had lost his stick and in a flash Letang fired the puck from the corner past the defenceman and goalie right onto Bonino’s stick who made no mistake.

The Sharks did well to battle back from a 2-0 first period deficit with two second period goals of their own. Furthermore Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau were the goal scorers and those are two of the players who have a history of sometimes disappearing at inopportune times.

San Jose is making its first ever Finals appearance and although the result was not what they wanted, they had to be battling some nerves and have to take some solace in how they worked to keep it close. But it will only matter if they can earn the split in game two and make a series out of it.

Last time out for San Jose, they were a 3-2 loser as they battled the Penguins on the road.

Pittsburgh took the opening contest. Look for the Penguins to continue with their offensive zone force and take a two game lead.
