Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tennessee

The Nashville Predators host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Bridgestone Arena in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday night. The Penguins lead series, 2-0.

Oddsmakers currently have Nashville Predators listed as 135-moneyline favorites, with the total at 5½.

Pittsburgh is halfway towards their second consecutive Stanley Cup after winning two straight on home ice to open the series.

If you’re Nashville you’re looking at the situation from a glass is half full perspective. They may be down two games to none, but they have been the better team for the majority of the time in both games.

They’ve outshot Pittsburgh 64-39 over the two games and have carried the play for large stretches of time.

What’s more, of the shots they allowed through the first two periods of game two, almost all of them came from the perimeter.

The game turned on a three-minute sequence early in the third period that was as much a result of luck as anything else.

Jake Guentzel is not playing like a rookie and he scored two more in the game to pace the Penguins attack. That includes the game winner in the 4-1 decision which came just ten seconds into the third period.

But the real back breaker came three minutes later when a centering pass bounced off of Predators player Vernon Fiddler and into the net.

Evgeni Malkin sealed the deal 15 seconds later on a beautiful goal which also chased Predators goalie Pekka Rinne.

The Finnish star was arguably the best player in the playoffs in leading Nashville through the first three rounds. He posted a sparkling .947 save percentage in getting the Predators to the Finals. It’s now at a crippling .777 through the first two games and he is arguably the biggest reason Nashville has their backs against the wall now.

It also doesn’t help matters that the 34-year old former Vezina winning goalie has never started and won a game in his distinguished career against Pittsburgh.

The Penguins offense started the playoffs with a huge bang through the first seven games of the playoffs. But it went dormant for almost a month, from game three against Washington until game four versus Ottawa. But since posting a 3-2 win on May 19th where they scored the first three goals of the game, Pittsburgh has now scored 23 goals in their last six games.

Between Malkin (9-17-26), Sidney Crosby (7-15-22), Phil Kessel (7-13-20) and Guentzel (12-7-19) they have the four highest point scorers in the playoffs on their team.

The highest scoring Predator is Filip Forsberg (8-7-15) and he’s still looking for his first point of the Finals. The Predators offense took a huge hit when Center Ryan Johansen was lost for the playoffs in game four versus Anaheim. He was leading the team in scoring at the time.
