Michigan State’s chances of repeating as the Big Ten’s Legends Division title will all but disappear if the Spartans suffer their second conference loss Saturday vs. Iowa. Spartans are a 9.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.
Iowa was off last week and last played Sept. 29, beating Minnesota 31-13. Mark Weisman ran for 177 yards, 155 in the first half, to lead Iowa and give the Hawkeyes possession of the Floyd of Rosedale bronze pig trophy. Christian Kirksey’s 68-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter sealed the win for Iowa (3-2, 1-0).
Michigan State (4-2, 1-1) already has lost twice at home this season. Last week, the Spartans were fortunate to avoid an upset at Indiana. Andrew Maxwell passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns, and Michigan State rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat Indiana 31-27. Aaron Burbridge caught eight passes for 134 yards and Le’Veon Bell ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries for the Spartans.
Burbridge’s 134 receiving yards set a Spartan single-game freshman record and are the most by a true freshman in the NCAA this season against an FBS opponent. Michigan State is 16-1 (.941) when Bell scores at least one rushing touchdown (2010: 5-0; 2011: 7-1; and 2012: 4-0).
Saturday’s game marks the 44th meeting between Michigan State and Iowa. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series 22-19-2, including a 13-9-1 record in games played in East Lansing. Iowa has won nine of the last 14 meetings, but the Spartans snapped a seven-game losing streak in Iowa City with a 37-21 victory at Kinnick Stadium last season on Nov. 12, 2011. The Hawkeyes won the last meeting in Spartan Stadium in 2009, 15-13; however, the Spartans have won four of their last ﬁve games against Iowa at home.
Michigan State is 63-30-3 (.672) in 96 Homecoming games, including a 6-1 record against Iowa. The Spartans have won ﬁve straight Homecoming games and 12 of their past 16.
