MLB Baseball National League probable pitching matchup and odds
By WagerWeb

Washington’s Gio Gonzalez can assure himself the major league lead in wins for this season if he were to beat the Phillies on Tuesday in his final start before the playoffs. The Nats are still battling the Reds for the top seed in the NL. Bet on Phillies-Nationals and every game at

Atlanta at Pittsburgh – Braves RHP Tommy Hanson (13-9, 4.38) vs. Pirates RHP Kevin Correia (11-11, 4.33): Hanson has not thrown six or more innings in his last seven starts and has a 4.64 ERA since returning from a trip to the disabled list because of a lower back strain. In his last start Thursday, Hanson got his first win since July 30. … In very likely his final start for Pittsburgh, the free-agent-to-be Correia takes his third crack at a 12th win that would tie his career high (also in 2009 and 2011). He blamed poor command for getting knocked around (six runs) in last start.

Philadelphia at Washington – Phillies RHP B.J. Rosenberg (1-2, 6.86) vs. Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez (21-8, 2.89): Rosenberg will be the first reliever appearing in a bullpen game for the Phillies, who find themselves short after Tyler Cloyd came up with a sore arm. …. Gonzalez could pass several milestones in his final regular-season start, nearing 200 innings with his 22nd win in sight. The NL Cy Young Award candidate beat the Phillies his last time out, striking out six as he allowed three runs over six innings.

NY Mets at Miami – Mets RHP R.A. Dickey (20-6, 2.69) vs. Marlins RHP Jacob Turner (2-5, 4.94): Despite throwing 128 pitches in his 20th win last Thursday at Citi Field, Dickey will make his final start of the season on regular rest. The knuckleballer has incentive to pitch well, given how tight a race the NL Cy Young is turning out to be. … Turner lost to the Mets on Sept. 21 at New York. He gave up six runs (three earned) in five innings that day. In his last start, Turner also had some hard luck. At Atlanta, he gave up four runs, two earned, in six innings.

Houston at Chicago Cubs – Astros RHP Bud Norris (6-13, 4.82) vs. Cubs RHP Chris Volstad (3-11, 6.64): Norris snapped a personal 12-game losing streak Wednesday, holding St. Louis to two hits and striking out seven in a season-high 7 1/3 scoreless innings. In his previous 18 starts, he was 0-12 with a 6.17 ERA. … Volstad gave up seven runs on 10 hits over three innings against the Rockies in his last outing and deviated from the game plan, according to manager Dale Sveum. This is Volstad’s last start.

San Diego at Milwaukee – Padres RHP Anthony Bass (2-7, 4.50) vs. Brewers RHP Tyler Thornburg (0-0, 5.00): Bass gets this start because the team opted to shut down scheduled starter Casey Kelly. Look for Bass to throw between 40-60 pitches. He was 2-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 14 starts this season before going on the DL in June with an inflamed right shoulder. … Thornburg replaces the injured Wily Peralta (biceps) for his first start since Sept. 2 at Triple-A Nashville. Thornburg has appeared only twice during a September callup, a victim of the Brewers’ unexpected postseason push.

Cincinnati at St. Louis – Reds RHP Mat Latos (13-4, 3.52) vs. Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter (0-1, 3.27): Latos retired 14 of his first 15 batters, with Carlos Gomez’s being his one blemish in the stretch, and his entire seven innings vs. Milwaukee on Thursday. However, he said he lacked his best stuff and was getting by with his changeup. … This will be Carpenter’s third start of the season, one that thoracic outlet syndrome threatened to end before it started. Carpenter showed improved command in his second outing and he’ll likely continue to get stronger.

Colorado at Arizona – Rockies RHP Jhoulys Chacin (3-5, 4.78): Chacin pitched five innings for the win against the Cubs on Thursday, yielding three runs on seven hits and four walks. He was effective when low in the zone, but he let hitters off the hook up in the zone when he had them at two strikes. … After surrendering a combined 11 earned runs over six innings in his last two starts, Corbin will look to finish his rookie campaign on a high note. The lefty gave up five runs on nine hits the last time he saw the Rockies.

San Francisco at LA Dodgers – Giants LHP Barry Zito (14-8, 4.19) vs. Dodgers LHP Chris Capuano (12-11, 3.69): Zito and the Giants have thrived together. They’ve won his last 10 starts, and he’s personally 6-0 in that span. But his ERA during that stretch is an ordinary 4.02. … Capuano will make one last start in 2012, which has been a tale of two seasons for the veteran. He was 9-3 with a 2.69 ERA through the first three months, but the last three have been a struggle and he’s now 12-11 with a 3.69 mark.
